Sorry if this news hits you as you sit at your desks with the rain lashing against the window, or as you sit at home with the curtains tightly closed and the central heating turned up full blast, but here in Southern Spain we are still waiting for winter to arrive.

Apart from a few indifferent days in November, we have seen clear blue skies most days, with daytime temperatures averaging around 18 degrees – extremely pleasant for this time of year, and a real contrast with last winter, when it seemed the whole of Europe took a real battering from the weather.

I´ve just been told that the UK has endured its coldest winter for 13 years. To be honest, it´s also been a pretty dismal winter here in Southern Spain, certainly the worst that I can recall since I bought my property in Marbella 8 years ago. The local Spanish people cannot believe it – they are always complaining about the cold and damp conditions. Certainly not very Mediettanean!

So I guess we must all be enduring a cold ´snap´ across Europe in general.

Although the UK seems unable to cope with ice and snow, it is certainly able to cope with the cold. In fact it does it very well. Each time I go to the UK during the winter months, I have the luxury of sitting in warm, cosy homes with radiators and carpets. Oh, the joys of central heating!

During the last 7 years, Marbella has changed – now instead of that one bar at the bottom of the hill in Elviria, you can find another 6 or 7 just like it. We have designer boutiques, English hairdressers, a Waitrose supermarket, fancy restaurants – so many things that I could never have imagined would be on my doorstep.

One of the great things about living here on the Costa del Sol is the mild year-round climate. However, although we have clear blue skies and plenty of sunshine today, I have to tell you that the temperature sank to just 2 degrees this morning – that´s the coldest I´ve ever known it since I´ve lived in my Marbella villa.

Things have improved a little – it´s now midday and it´s 8 degress, but that´s still VERY cold for Marbella.

I have a friend who lives in the mountain village of Ojen, and he told me that he was scraping ice from his car windscreen this morning before leaving for work!

Spain isn´t perfect. For the majority of expats, Spain will never feel truly like ´home´.

But recently, I´ve got to thinking about the simple things in life, and now appreciate Spain so much more for being able to offer the simplest pleasures in life on a regular basis.

The weather is the key. While the UK and Northern Europe languishes in a dreary, grey blanket of cloud, incessant rain and freezing temperatures, Southern Spain basks in 320 days of sunshine. Continue reading »
