So maybe we had been having things too good after all, but winter finally arrived on the Costa del Sol in the 3rd week of December.

Coastal resorts and inland areas in Andalucia were hit by torrential rain, thunderstorms and howling gales during a 3 week period which lasted all over the Christmas and New Year periods, bringing misery and travel chaos to many areas. Continue reading »



I know that most of Europe is enjoying decent weather at the moment, but I can certainly assure people that Southern Spain is no different.

In fact, here on the Costa del Sol, it´s been feeling like the middle of August with average daytime temperatures hitting 30 degrees. Yesterday, when I got into my car in a local car park outside my Marbella property the temperature gauge read 46 degrees – unpleasantly warm.

Wow! While we all marvel at scenes of Big Ben covered in snow this week, I have to report that here on the Costa del Sol, all is not well.

We are receiving a severe soaking. After a stunning, sunny week, thunderstorms arrived here in Marbella on Sunday (you can always tell when they are on their way when you start to lose your satellite signal and you have to revert to plan B – your saved programmes on Sky+), and have continued throughout Monday and the best part of today. In fact, as I´m writing this I can hear the rain outside lashing against the window of my office.

Spain isn´t perfect. For the majority of expats, Spain will never feel truly like ´home´.

But recently, I´ve got to thinking about the simple things in life, and now appreciate Spain so much more for being able to offer the simplest pleasures in life on a regular basis.

The weather is the key. While the UK and Northern Europe languishes in a dreary, grey blanket of cloud, incessant rain and freezing temperatures, Southern Spain basks in 320 days of sunshine. Continue reading »



I recently returned to my Marbella property from the UK, having visited for a few days prior to Xmas. Sure, I was excited about seeing my friends and family, and was looking forward to an evening in the local pub and a spot of shopping in Liverpool´s latest shopping haven, Liverpool One.

Nothing could have prepared me for the reality. Is it just me, or is England ´going to the dogs´?

First of all, when you arrive at Liverpool airport, the first thing to greet you as you leave the plane is the howling wind and incessant rain as you descend the steps to the tarmac below. Has nobody ever heard of air-bridges in the provinces? Continue reading »
