British Tourists in Spain

What is it about British people when they travel to Spain? As soon as they step foot in a foreign country, you can spot them a mile away…and for all the wrong reasons.

First of all, I am British, but I live in a very cosmopolitan place, in a property on the Costa del Sol, surrounded by people of all ages and from all walks of life. The local international college teaches a broad international expatriate base of 22 different nationalities. Secondly, I like my football, I enjoy a beer….but I feel like I have nothing in common with these people.

Although it has existed in various guises for over 50 years, the current UD Marbella football club was founded in 1997 by Antonio Perez Ramos and is currently run by Chief Executive Ian Radford and features veteran striker Tommy Mooney as its star player. Currently playing in Spain´s 2nd Division B – the equivalent third tier of England´s 1st Division, Marbella´s football team are only 2 promotions away from playing host to the Spanish footballing giants of Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Sport in Spain

Since moving to Spain earlier this year I have been overwhelmed with the opportunities for everyone to enjoy sport!

Compared to the UK where you get abused (from both your own team or opposition) on a Sunday morning whilst playing football, spend dark winter nights running into walls whilst playing squash and dodging the rain on a Saturday for the long awaited cricket match, Spain is definitely a breath of fresh air! My family and I have enjoyed a wealth of outdoor experiences, from walking on the mountains of La Concha in Marbella to competitive padel games at my local racquets club.
