Although many prospective Spanish property buyers are keen to invest in property for sale in Mallorca or the other Balearic islands of Menorca and Ibiza, most buyers still seem to be favouring making a purchase on the Spanish mainland.

With the majority of buyers now purchasing properties in Spain for 2nd homes, holiday residences and jet-set boltholes, the key criteria are now related to year-round ease of access, amenities and weather.

Many find that although a 2 week holiday on the beach in Mallorca is idyllic in the summer, during the winter months when people are often looking to best utilise their place in the sun, island living doesn´t quite stack up.

I´ve seen various reports in the Spanish and English media during the last few weeks, headlining that “Spain continues to be the top country for Brits behaving badly, with drink and drugs contributing to the problems of over 5,000 people who needed consular help in Spain during the last 12 months”.

These headlines (and these figures) should be given some sort of perspective….and I´m just the man to provide it!

There are lots of Spanish property bargains out there. Prices are falling and some vendors are desperate to sell. However, the biggest mistake that is currently being made by Spanish property buyers is the fatal attraction to the lowest prices.

If you see 2 properties on the Costa del Sol, with one priced at €100,000 and the other at €400,000 euros, the natural tendency is to the think that the cheaper property represents the better example of a Spanish property bargain. That isn´t necessarily the case.

What if the original price of the cheaper property had been €150,000 while the price of the more expensive property had been reduced from €700,000? Continue reading »



On the Costa del Sol, we have a free newspaper which hits the newsstands every Friday. Sur in English is THE English language journal for the region, offering news, opinion, a rundown of local events, plus a thriving classified advertising section dedicated to everything from cars and boats to plumbers and masseurs.

One of the most popular sections of Sur in English has traditionally been the ´Costa del Sol Properties for Sale´ section, advertising all sorts of properties on the Costa del Sol, from inland ruins to coastal apartments.

Taking into account the crisis-hit housing market on the Costas, you would expect this section to be crammed with opportunities for the Spanish bargain hunter, but I was amazed to find just 24 adverts for properties in Marbella in last week´s edition. Continue reading »
