Don´t even attempt to get anything done in Spain in August. Not a thing. It just won´t happen.

I moved into my new home in Marbella at the end of July, but the week before had asked for a replacement washing machine, as the one that my builder had installed had developed an electrical fault. The manaufacturer´s engineer examined it on 22nd July and concluded that yes, it was indeed buggered, and had probably been so since leaving the factory in Germany. I was promised a new one within 7 days.

Interesting figures have revealed that in July this year, 69.43% of hotel rooms in Marbella and Estepona were occupied. This is compared to an occupancy rate of 70.81% during the same month in 2008.

In the first two weeks of August this year 87.83% of hotel rooms in Marbella and Estepona were booked, compared to a figure of 81% for the same period last year.

The Costa del Sol has seen its highest sea-water temperatures for 25 years during August, according to the Spanish Oceanography Institute.

Normally the average temperature of the water in August is 20.7 degrees centigrade, but this month the temperature of the sea water has soared to 26.5 degrees.

Hot and busy – these are the best 2 words to describe the Costa del Sol at the moment. If the Brits are staying at home this year, then the Spaniards are certainly opting to do the same!

I spent Saturday in Benalmadena, the popular tourist resort just 15 minutes from Malaga airport. The area is normally dominated by British tourists enjoying the sun, but this time I would estimate that the population was 70% Spanish.

Oh….My…..God.

It seems that Marks & Spencer are to open a 1,000m2 store in La Canada commercial centre, offering clothing, homeware and food.

I can´t wait! The amount of times I have been asked ´What do you miss most about the UK´ and replied ´Marks and Spencer food halls´ is staggering ………and now I am only weeks away from seeing the real thing, here in Marbella.

Call me a drama queen, but we have had more than our fair share of fatal forest fires here in Spain this summer, so please don´t blame me when I get completely irate when I see drivers casually lobbing cigarette-ends out of their car windows as they drive along in the summer sun.

I´ve seen this happen so many times in the last week that I am surprised the whole place hasn´t gone up in flames! I´ve seen the tab-ends being dropped close to dry brush-land, grass verges…even petrol stations.

I was out shopping this morning in El Trastero de Macarena, the fabulously shabby shed of a furniture store in San Pedro on the Costa del Sol (meant in a nice way!), when in walked former Spanish Prime Minister, Jose Maria Aznar and his wife.

For those who need reminding, Aznar was the Prime Minister of Spain at the time of the Iraq war, and was welcomed into the fold by Messrs, Bush and Blair when the French and Germans weren´t quite so agreeable to the idea of a war in the Middle East.

Many people may already be familiar with the ´original´ Terra Sana restaurant, located opposite the Andalucia Plaza Hotel in Nueva Andalucia. Although a little hidden from the tourist trail, the eaterie has been hugely popular with locals and expats in Marbella for years, serving a variety of fresh and healthy dishes, such as wraps, salads, smoothies and daily specials.

Due to a recent expansion, the company now boasts 8 outlets, with additional restaurants in the following locations:

There are plenty of properties on the Costa del Sol that are in need of a makeover, and plenty of new buyers that will be shopping around for furniture for their newly acquired Spanish property. Rather than stick to the usual mass-market furniture stores that you can find in all the out-of-town shopping malls, I would strongly recommend paying a visit to El Trastero de Macarena, literally translated as “Macarena´s storeroom”.

El Trastero de Macarena is a real hidden gem of a place, a scruffy looking shack at the side of the street at the traffic lights in San Pedro de Alcantara, opposite McDonald´s. Don´t be fooled by its appearance though. El Trastero is a mix of antique shop, bric-a brac store, and chic furniture outlet. From French farmhouse to art-deco, you will find it here.

Some good news at last for Lanzarote´s under pressure tourist industry as the low cost flight specialists Ryanair recently announced a major shift in the focus of their operations, unveiling a total of 39 new services to the Canary Islands, commencing from October as the company seeks to take advantage of the current suspension of taxes and charges at Spanish airports.

The number of tourists visiting Lanzarote has fallen back dramatically during the first half of this year, with total foreign arrivals dropping by 18% and British tourism down by over 20% thanks to the detrimental impact of the credit crunch and the current weakness of sterling against the euro.
