weather costa del sol The recent torrential rain that we have seen here on the Costa del Sol at least provided some small shred of comfort for local residents.
The region´s reservoirs have doubled in capacity in the last few weeks, with December´s rainfall alone guaranteeing water for the next 2 years here in Andalucia – yes, it rained THAT much! Continue reading »

piers morgan marbella I must admit that I sat down last week to watch Piers Morgan´s appraisal of Marbella on ITV with an element of fear and trepidation. After all, he hadn´t been too kind in the past during similar exposes of places such as Monaco and Dubai.
Although Morgan managed to dig up some dirt and spent a proportion of the programme focusing on Marbella´s seedier side of life, I personally thought that, for the most part, he portrayed Marbella as a great, fun place to be, and actually managed to inject a dose of much-needed glamour into proceedings. The main message that came across to me was that Marbella attracts hordes of the seriously wealthy – in fact everywhere he went, there seemed to be Ferraris, palaces, 5 star beach clubs, and flowing champagne – not a bad life really! The fact that much of this wealth seemed to have been squandered on homes that were rarely occupied, cars that were driven simply for fun and so much champagne that it ended up being sprayed across the naked torsos of overly-moneyed teenage boys on a beach somewhere, only really added to the jaw-dropping spectacle. lanzarote villas The number of British tourists taking holidays in Lanzarote jumped by nearly 7% in November 2009, according to the latest figures just released by the Spanish airport operators AENA, as the popular holiday island and investment hot spot starts to feel the benefit from the introduction of a whole raft of new flight services to the island from budget airline Ryanair.
Earlier this year the British market – Lanzarote´s largest and most important source of tourist numbers – had been in freefall. With declines of 20% and more recorded as UK consumers struggled with the double whammy of a sharp depreciation in sterling versus the euro and the confidence sapping effects of the credit crunch. weather in marbella So maybe we had been having things too good after all, but winter finally arrived on the Costa del Sol in the 3rd week of December.
Coastal resorts and inland areas in Andalucia were hit by torrential rain, thunderstorms and howling gales during a 3 week period which lasted all over the Christmas and New Year periods, bringing misery and travel chaos to many areas. Continue reading »

weather in spain Sorry if this news hits you as you sit at your desks with the rain lashing against the window, or as you sit at home with the curtains tightly closed and the central heating turned up full blast, but here in Southern Spain we are still waiting for winter to arrive.
Apart from a few indifferent days in November, we have seen clear blue skies most days, with daytime temperatures averaging around 18 degrees – extremely pleasant for this time of year, and a real contrast with last winter, when it seemed the whole of Europe took a real battering from the weather.

resident permit in spain I know, I know – you think I´ve simply used that word to attract your attention, but it turns out that the 2 most debated points on the agenda at last week´s meeting of Marbella´s town councilors were indeed sex and parking.
It now seems that sex in the open air in Marbella is a big no-no. A new by-law has been approved that will prohibit sexual acts in public places, albeit with a restriction that the law is only applied to those acts committed within 250 metres of residential areas, educational centres or commercial zones. It seems that for the past 8 years I´ve been missing out – all those hours spent queueing at the checkout in Supersol when I could have been up to all sorts….talk about wasted time!!

rental property in costa del sol For those of you who are new to living in Spain, you need to be warned about the dreaded ´puente´ in December. The Puente (meaning ´bridge´ in Spanish) is the term given to the period of time adjoining the 2 Spanish national bank holidays that fall on the 6th and the 8th December.
Most businesses in Spain choose to ´bridge´ the gap in the holidays by adding a 3rd day to the vacation (the 7th), meaning that the country grinds to a standstill for 3 entire days. I can´t quite imagine any other country being able to afford to down tools for 3 days a couple of weeks before Xmas.

villas in spain Could the clouds finally be lifting on Lanzarote? After a year of successive double digit decreases in visitor numbers the rate of decline in tourist arrivals halved last month on this popular holiday island. According to the latest figures just released by the Spanish airport operators AENA, with the German market – Lanzarote´s second largest – even recording positive growth for the first time this year.
The latest passenger figures from AENA reveal that the number of foreign tourists arriving on flights to Lanzarote fell last month by ‘just 8.17%’ - a figure almost half that of previous months this year, suggesting that there may at last be signs of optimism for the many overseas owners of apartments and villas in Lanzarote.

properties at puente romano hotel Out of all the months to spend time in Spain, October is my personal favourite.
The heat of the summer has passed, the temperature averages out at a very acceptable 23 degrees, and most of the tourists have left the Costas and have headed home.
Now is the time when the owners of properties on the Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol breathe a huge sigh of relief and start to enjoy their surroundings again.
