The punk rock band The Damned wrote a song called ‘Sick of being Sick’. That exactly sums up how I feel. I caught a particularly nasty virus here in Spain about three weeks ago and am only just beginning to get the better of it.
It starts out feeling like an ordinary cold but with a very bad cough. It becomes more serious in about 5-7 days and becomes full-blown flu: you ache all over, your appetite goes, head throbs as does your throat, your stomach hurts and you get a raging fever. The worst bit though is that the cough becomes a really bad chesty one and stops you sleeping at night.
As it’s a virus there’s nothing you can do and you just have to wait for your immune system to kick in. My husband’s boss has caught it and went to the doctors. He was given antibiotics the size of miniature submarines but they wouldn’t even touch this illness. Try to rest, drink as much as possible and attempt to eat, if you are unfortunate to catch this.
The best advice is to go and have a flu jab, it only costs six euros and the good news is that you don’t even need to go to the doctors here in Spain - the larger Farmacias will inoculate you.
Next year I’m going to be the first in the queue!
