I´ve just moved into a new villa in Marbella, and was initially nervous about the heating arrangements.
I have been in Spain for 8 years, and although I´ve moved about a fair bit during that time, I have always lived in Spanish properties with air conditioning installed for both warm and cool air. To be honest, I´ve never been a great fan of air con. The air is very dry and can irritate the skin and the eyes after a while, but I doubted there could be a viable alternative.
I was wrong. My new Spanish villa is equipped with underfloor heating, and I am seriously impressed.
First of all, I must come clean and tell you that initially I thought the system was malfunctioning, as after half an hour or so I could feel no difference in the temperature of the marble floors beneath my feet. I had expected piping hot floors within seconds, until I was advised that it normally takes a little longer to heat an inch of marble – try 3 hours for starters!
But I can tell you, it´s worth the wait. Like nothing I´ve ever experienced in a Spanish property, the heat is a glowing warmth that pervades the whole house, and it also lasts for hours. Once it´s warmed up, you can adjust the thermostat accordingly to maintain an even temperature throughout. It was like a radiator for the feet – fabulous!
My new villa in Spain also has ceiling fans for the summer, so I´ll let you know how I get on with those in the next few months….but until then, I´m off back to my warm floors!
