Since moving to Spain earlier this year I have been overwhelmed with the opportunities for everyone to enjoy sport!
Compared to the UK where you get abused (from both your own team or opposition) on a Sunday morning whilst playing football, spend dark winter nights running into walls whilst playing squash and dodging the rain on a Saturday for the long awaited cricket match, Spain is definitely a breath of fresh air! My family and I have enjoyed a wealth of outdoor experiences, from walking on the mountains of La Concha in Marbella to competitive padel games at my local racquets club.
I have been particularly impressed with the opportunities for the mature crowd. Aside from the plethora of golf courses on the coast, I have enjoyed the welcoming atmosphere of Spanish clubs and societies. I remember playing squash at my gym in the UK with a fiercely competitive ladder system for elite players. Here in Spain I have enjoyed a new sport to me called padel, basically a smaller scale version of tennis, but nowhere near as difficult to get a game going. I also enjoy the fact it is best played as a doubles game. My local club is a hive of activity on a Sunday afternoon with families and friends taking part or watching on the terrace bar, a great way to spend the afternoon!
The climate lends itself well to sporting and leisure activities, I would encourage everyone to visit their local club and see what is going on!
