Conversation overheard at a local café in Andalucia
Not so long ago, I was by myself drinking a coffee at my local café in rural Andalucia and watching the world go by when a couple came and sat at the table next to me. The lady was very English, blonde and well-dressed. The man was Spanish and looked very professional, he could have been a local lawyer or accountant and he spoke excellent English. They were obviously really good friends and totally at ease with each other.
The general chit-chat changed to discussing cultural differences and jokes were made about Spanish driving, the English obsession with tomato ketchup etc. and then the conversation took a more serious turn.
The man asked the woman, “Honestly what do you dislike most about the Spanish?”
The lady was silent for a minute or so and said, “I don’t like the way that you just dump your rubbish anywhere and everywhere, you are really untidy and I don’t think that you are kind to animals”.
The lady then turned to the man and asked, “What is it that you dislike about the English”, the man said, “I don’t like the way you come to my country and don’t even try to learn my language or integrate with the Spanish community and I don’t think that you treat your children or old people properly”.
The couple were silent for a while and then changed the subject…
