Spain isn´t perfect. For the majority of expats, Spain will never feel truly like ´home´.
But recently, I´ve got to thinking about the simple things in life, and now appreciate Spain so much more for being able to offer the simplest pleasures in life on a regular basis.
The weather is the key. While the UK and Northern Europe languishes in a dreary, grey blanket of cloud, incessant rain and freezing temperatures, Southern Spain basks in 320 days of sunshine.This Mediterranean climate seems to have supreme stress-busting qualities – it makes Southern Spain´s inhabitants seem friendlier, more sociable and generally calmer than their UK counterparts.
On Boxing Day last week, while the UK endured average temperatures of 6 degress, I was taking a walk along my local beach at Los Monteros, just a 5 minute walk from my apartment in Marbella. The pictures that accompany this article were taken by me on 26th December 2008 at 10.30am. As the temperature approached 18 degress, I took great delight in watching the fishing boats returning to port with their overnight catch, I paddled in the Mediterranean Sea and stopped at a beachside café to indulge in a coffee and croissant as I admired the view and watched the world go by.
I felt truly happy….and so very lucky to have this all at my fingertips – this amazing scenery, the waves lapping at my ankles, the warmth of the sun, and complete calm surrounding me.
Whenever I become even remotely stressed with my work on the Costa del Sol, I take myself off for a 30 minute walk on the beach in Marbella, and during my time there, I often imagine all my friends in the UK, scurrying around crowded, soulless cities in their suits and ties, or squashed like sardines inside a tube train, before they continue their journey home in the rain.
One of my guilty pleasures I´m afraid!
