Call me a drama queen, but we have had more than our fair share of fatal forest fires here in Spain this summer, so please don´t blame me when I get completely irate when I see drivers casually lobbing cigarette-ends out of their car windows as they drive along in the summer sun.
I´ve seen this happen so many times in the last week that I am surprised the whole place hasn´t gone up in flames! I´ve seen the tab-ends being dropped close to dry brush-land, grass verges…even petrol stations.
Trust me, half a flaming Marlboro Light and 40 degree heat is not a good mix.
Around 7 years ago, we had a serious forest fire in the hills of Mijas on the Costa del Sol apparently started by a spark from a broken-down car. The devastation was incredible and several hundred hectares of stunning forested landscape were lost to the flames.
It really doesn´t take much to get things started.
