A couple of years ago, I was invited by Polaris World to watch Real Madrid take on Norwegian champions Rosenborg in a Champions League tie at the Estadio Bernabeu. Here´s how it went….
As I live in the Costa del Sol, I firstly caught a morning flight from Malaga to Barajas Airport in Madrid. My guest on the trip was particularly looking forward to a spot of retail therapy, so we spent the afternoon sampling the delights of Madrid´s designer stores, before having a late siesta at our hotel, the grand Intercontinental.
The hotel was ideally placed, only a 10 minute stroll from the ground. When approaching the Bernabeu, one of the world´s most famous stadia, on foot prepare to be underwhelmed – it doesn´t dominate the skyline like a Wembley or a San Siro, instead it just hits you as you come across it, hidden from view along a shady tree-lined avenue.
However, once inside, prepare to be impressed. We were being entertained in an enclosed executive box, so we weren´t able to sample at first hand the intimidating atmosphere from the seats below us, but the stadium itself is breathtaking – a tall, steep arena that envelops the action below it. And action was aplenty – we saw both Brits score for Madrid – Woodgate and Beckham - after the home side had conceded an early, sloppy goal.
It was all very pleasant, with free drinks and nibbles – even my guest was impressed!
