It’s been an eventful weekend here in Spain. Over the past few days it hasn’t just rained, it’s been torrential!
British rain, albeit annoying, persistent and constant, can’t be compared to the Autumn weather on the Costa del Sol.
The weather on the Costa del Sol is glorious except for 4-6 weeks in the Autumn when the heavens open and we get what I call, our ‘Monsoon season’.
Be aware this rain can at times cause ‘muchas problemas’!
Before we bought our house in Spain, we were renting in the countryside, the rain came down in torrents, we had a few leaks, put buckets down in the vulnerable places and went to bed. When we woke up in the morning the back of the house was buried under a three and a half foot mudslide! And as for the swimming pool, it was literally a mud bath.
I phoned up the landlord who just couldn’t understand why I was making such a fuss and who asked, “Can’t you just get a shovel and clear it up?”
I think he was pretty staggered when he saw it for himself – it took a digger and a team of workmen a whole day to clear up the mess.
This weekend the rain has been horrendous. We woke up to find we had a power outage. (We later found out from the electricity company that this was due to a ‘dead eagle on the main power supply’….)
When our power came back on, only part of the house was functioning. The rain had been so bad that water had seeped into our electrics causing a partial failure.
We called our electrician who, through trial and error, found the problem and fixed it but it took over a day and at one point he said that the whole of our garden may have to be dug up to isolate the problem!
Our neighbours have had their swimming pools overflowing and problems with blocked drains.
OK so we moan about the downside but we need all this rain, it is vital for the reservoirs and for local agriculture. The summer has been the hottest for years and the autumn rains should really be welcomed, after all the rainy season is only about a month. In just a few days of rain the countryside has been transformed from a scorched summer landscape into lush greenery.
