Puerto Banus - where have all the people gone?!    England - the place gets worse!
Puerto Banus - in need of rescue!

Puerto Banus may have its glamorous side, but you really shouldn´t expect to stumble across dried vomit and dog crap once you step out of Louis Vuitton with your thousand euro handbag.

Complaints about the state of the place have been rising in recent years, and things seemed to reach a head in the summer, when Puerto Banus resembled places such as Playa de Las Americas and Benidorm, albeit with some of the best designer shopping and motor yachts in the world!
Honestly, it´s become a strange place - on the one hand, it´s Bond Street on the Sea, the playground of the rich and famous, and home to more swanky Lamborghinis and Maseratis than anywhere outside Mayfair or Beverly Hills. On the other hand, it has a dark, seedy side that is sometimes hard to stomach.

Puerto Banus clearly caters for gangs of guys, either groups of golfers or stag parties. Football bars and lapdancing lounges have become the new businesses of choice in Puerto Banus during the last 3 years. The result of this is the frequent sight of a gang of guys in beach shorts and football shirts, sinking pint after pint, offering the occasional roar when somebody sores a goal on Sky Sports. Not very Gucci is it?

It gets even worse later in the evening, as a plethora of hookers descend on the place, and try to tempt you in to the various seedy bars. Not very comfortable while you are strolling though the place with your wife and kids.

In fairness, Puerto Banus has been heading downhill since Jesus Gil lost control of the Marbella Town Hall all those years ago. For all his faults, one thing was sure – during his time in office, tourists would never have happened upon PRs touting you into bars or ladies of the night summoning you for business.

The good news is that the new mayor, Angeles Munoz has stepped up the plan to revitalize and tidy up Puerto Banus and give it its rightful place as the jewel of the Mediterranean.

It if was left to me, I would confine all sports bars to the 2nd line, limit the number of lapdancing bars, and have a total ban on soliciting of any kind on the streets of the port. Puerto Banus has worked hard to attract the most incredible names and money to its establishments – it would be a shame to waste all of that hard work now.

Slightly unfair i think. Like most places, Banus has had its problems. It certainly needs a bit of a clean up, but I was there last week, and the place looked pretty good.
