I must admit that I sat down last week to watch Piers Morgan´s appraisal of Marbella on ITV with an element of fear and trepidation. After all, he hadn´t been too kind in the past during similar exposes of places such as Monaco and Dubai.

Although Morgan managed to dig up some dirt and spent a proportion of the programme focusing on Marbella´s seedier side of life, I personally thought that, for the most part, he portrayed Marbella as a great, fun place to be, and actually managed to inject a dose of much-needed glamour into proceedings. The main message that came across to me was that Marbella attracts hordes of the seriously wealthy – in fact everywhere he went, there seemed to be Ferraris, palaces, 5 star beach clubs, and flowing champagne – not a bad life really! The fact that much of this wealth seemed to have been squandered on homes that were rarely occupied, cars that were driven simply for fun and so much champagne that it ended up being sprayed across the naked torsos of overly-moneyed teenage boys on a beach somewhere, only really added to the jaw-dropping spectacle.

The place that perhaps benefited most from Piers Morgan´s analysis of Marbella was its famous Golden Mile, the area that stretches from the traditional thriving town of Marbella itself to the jet-set playground of Puerto Banus. Along the Golden Mile, Piers was particularly keen to point out the Marbella Club Hotel, the impressive mosque, and of course the Saudi Royal Palace.

Of course, Piers managed to get some of his customary digs in, even pointing out renowned after-dark haunt Milady Palace along the Golden Mile in the same breath, but he genuinely seemed quite taken with the place. Lord help us, I think he may be back!

As for Marbella, well it looked absolutely fabulous – in fact, I almost wanted to live there…………oh, hang on a minute!!

Piers Morgan is so easily impressed! Show him a bit of bling and he is easily taken in. The more vulgar the place, the better. No class unfortunately.

There are very few places in the world that can offer 100% class when such a lot of money is sloshing around. Money doesn´t necessarily buy taste, and so there will always be outrageous sights to see in wealthy areas such as Marbella, Monte Carlo etc. Like Piers Morgan said so well, Marbella offers people a little bit of everything. If you want glitz and glamour, there´s plenty of it, if you want a bit of trash, you will find that too. If you want traditional Spanish culture, that´s on tap….and if you fancy watching your favourite football team with a pint of Tetley´s, that can be done too.

I guess that´s why the place is so popular.

The programme was very focused on Puerto Banus though. The title should have been PIERS MORGAN ON PUERTO BANUS, not PIERS MORGAN ON MARBELLA.

Interesting comment. Piers Morgan hardly focused on the REAL Marbella, but I guess that is because Puerto Banus is the main magnet for the celebrity and eurotrash culture….and therefore it makes great TV. Marbella itself is a thriving, working Mediterranean town, but wouldn´t have been as atractive on screen.

When I first came to Spain 8 years ago, I thought my life would centre around Puerto Banus, but I usually find myself in Marbella Old Town and the many great bars and restaurants for my social life, while Banus is of course great for shopping, and indeed offers something completely different as it offers mere mortals like me a glimpse into a world of fast cars, even faster boats and the best designer shopping!
