While all the fuss in Spain on Sunday evening centred around the battle for the La Liga football crown (would Real Madrid manage to pip Barcelona to the championship on the final day?), there were far more important matters to contend with at the La Rosaleda stadium in Malaga.
The local team, having flirted with relegation all season, faced a massive challenge to stay in the division. Not only would they need to gain at least a point from their final game, but they would have to do so against the mighty Real Madrid, who knew that nothing less than a win would suffice if they were to maintain their chase of Barcelona at the top of the table.
No chance then?
Well, Malaga surprised everyone by digging their heels in and managing to grab a nail-biting 1-1 draw. Even the draw wasn´t sufficient in itself to guarantee safety for the club, but with results elsewhere going their way, Malaga managed to stay up against all the odds, and will again be competing in La Liga next year.
