Joining a gym - is there any point?
                                       a

I´ve joined a gym.

Not sure why, and not sure how long it will last, but right now, I am a fully paid up member of a gymnasium in Puerto Banus.

I think it must have something to do with my mid-life crisis – I must surely be due for one as I approach my 40th birthday in May! Or maybe it´s just that I ate far too much at Christmas, and need to lose a few kilos.

I´ve been going to this gym in Puerto Banus for 6 weeks now, and I just don´t ´get it´. First of all, you have to conquer the fear – the fear of not having a clue what you are supposed to be doing. Then comes the intimidation – the intimidation of all these young, muscled hunks of flesh who look like they´ve been here for years. Then you realise that you look like an idiot – who the heck would dream of wearing a pair of trainers that are normally reserved for walking the dog along the beach? – that will be me then! Then you realise that nobody actually speaks to anyone (they just grunt a lot) and that going to the gym is a lonely life, particularly if you go at different times each day, meaning that you don´t even see the same faces each time.

You can tell I´m loving it, can´t you?!

Yet, the gym is like laboratory full of specimens for the budding psychologist - for all the testosterone, perspiration and fabulous bodies on display, there is one thing that grips you after a while…..the insecurities of most of us who go. Maybe it´s not too much in evidence to those passing through, but take a closer look and you can see it – the young lad who thinks he has sparrow legs, the young mum who thinks she has a big bum, the muscled 30-something who thinks he looks puny when he looks in the mirror, and me……a guy fast approaching 40 who feels like he´s aged 10 years in 10 months, and is scared stiff of getting old!

So after all this depression and hard work, you would probably agree that I deserve a treat(?) so my reward for all of this nonsense? - A coffee and a cake at the café next door in Puerto Banus.

Seriously, what is the point?!
