Horse Riding in Spain

Riding on the coast or owning a horse in sunny Spain is some people’s idea of paradise,  and in many cases it is. Riding on the long stretches of beach, swimming in the sea with your horse, galloping along river beds as the sun sets behind the mountains, what more could you ask for?

There are many stables and equestrian centres in Spain, some of a very high standard, approved by the British Horse Society. They offer wide ranges of riding from dressage to show jumping, hacking, trekking, Spanish, Portuguese, doma vaquera and lots more, depending on where in Spain. I have owned horses for the years that I have been living in Spain and it has been a joy, every step of the way.

The first stables that I belonged to are called “Finca la Alegria” and it is situated in the campo of La Cala de Mijas on the Costa del Sol. These stables offer livery, a riding school, breaking and schooling, a pony club and riding club. The hustle and bustle of the place always brings a smile to your face, and with a bar and restaurant on site you´re constantly occupied.

There are many competitions held locally and affiliated competitions further afield - whether you’re competing in leagues or just for fun, there is something for everyone.

Andalucia has a very special breed of horse that can be found in most stables, the Andalucian. A much wanted breed in most parts of the world as they are very flashy horses who are very calm and brilliant at dressage. Having owned one myself, I recommend this horse to anyone. Even the stallions are easy to handle and reward you with such grace. This part of Spain is very proud of this breed.

The Spanish festivals, known as Ferias, are always full of Spanish horses with men and women doubled up with the traditional Spanish dresses and matador outfits. The people of Spain take their ferias very seriously. This has been a tradition in Spain for hundreds of years and is still carried out today with many people taking part. It’s a chance for the owners to show off their wonderfully kept horses and to dress up in wonderful colours and outfits. Even the English people who live in Spain try and take part. So for riding in Spain, you can’t really get much better.
