Holidays in Spain – will any Brits be here in 2009??

With the rapid demise of sterling (today´s rate is a record low of €1.02), it is thought that many people will be looking to scrap their plans for a 2009 holiday in Spain (or any other Eurozone country), and instead opt for countries that seemingly offer better value for money, such as Turkey and the United States.

Sky News research yesterday reported that instead of abandoning plans to holiday in Spain altogether, most prospective travelers were more likely to increase the frequency of their foreign holidays, but to spend a shorter period of time away from home during each break.
This seems to suggest that visitors to Spain in 2009 will be spending a little less time here per trip, but may be making more visits that usual throughout the year. Perhaps this reflects the general view that sterling will recover some of its lost ground against the euro in the 2nd half of 2009, so rather than indulging in a potentially expensive and lengthy primary holiday in Spain, tourists are more inclined to spread their risk to the currency fluctuations across a series of shorter, sharper visits.

Although the cost of living in Spain is undoubtedly higher for those exchanging sterling into euros, the same cannot be said for flight and accommodation transactions made in sterling, meaning that the price and value of flights and accommodation are likely to remain unchanged. In fact, flying with the low cost carriers is still relatively cheap, and there is every likelihood that you will be able to find cheaper apartments and villas to rent in Spain as competition for tourists increases during the economic difficulties.

To avoid any undue exposure to the plummeting value of sterling, my advice would be to book your flights in the UK, paying in pounds, and then to shop around online to find UK-based landlords who will accept sterling payment to rent their apartment or villa in Spain.

Needless to say, if you pay locally for hotel accommodation in Spain in euros, you will be exposing yourself fully to sterling´s demise, so make sure you shop around and try to find a UK based hotel broker who will accept payment for Spanish hotel accommodation in sterling.

We have been in the “Holiday Business” for 6 years in Estepona. We offer spotlessly clean, beautiful apartments with sea views and, touch-wood , have found that British clients are still booking for 2009. We give them a “deal” which helps a little with the poor exchange rate, but a seemingly cheaper option is to spend quality holiday time in the U.K. in the cold or rain. Then costs really start to mount, especially if you have children - where to take them - and the high costs. Spain is still a cost-effective euro destination - cheaper than France, Italy and parts of Greece.

Dear USDgbpMen
If yor comment relates to the info on our website http://www.theextramileholidays.com I have been collecting it, plus a lot more info that we e-mail to clients when they book with us, over the past 7 years. Much comes from books on working & living in Spain; magazine articles etc.
Do you live here and have flats to rent out, or are you seeking accommodation?

Definately will not go to Vilamoura anymore, 6 Hour rounds of Golf and 4.5 Euros for a beer , we will stay clear of the Vilamoura golf courses this year, and the so called free shuttle bus turns up if you are lucky.

Well done Sean !!!
Seems our unhappy holidaymaker didn’t come to Estepona in SPAIN,
but went instead to Vilamoura in PORTUGAL. I don’t mind criticism
about our country that can be defended, but at least get the country right !!!

I have been watching the horror stories of unfortunate brits buying in Spain. Just watched one where all the paperwork is entirely legal but the bloody Spaniards decide to demolish after changing their wicked minds after of course taking all the fees and allowing the Spanish builders to take their money.
I have come to the conclusion that Britain is the only fair play country in the world and we are hated for it.
I for one will not be holidaying ever again in Spain. They robbed these elderly people not only of their hard earned money that hey have scrimped and saved all their lives for but of their dignity and totally demoralised and broke them. I now detest this country for its low scruples and money grabbing to point of theft behaviour. One question remains why does the European Union allow this sort of legalised thieving:? I truly believe that our sins come back to haunt us and hopefully it will happen in all its fury to all the perpetrators of this hideous crime one day. Heres wishing them all the worst that life can offer

Numbers are falling becausse of the recession and the exchange rate. But there are other factors at work. The Costa del Sol has become hugely overpriced. Regions like Murcia are offering golf, visitors are rising even in the recession and I guess a lot of the traffic is being directed away from the Costa del Sol. For example at Polaris World you can play for 44 Euros, rent for a week from 99 Euros and buy on a Jack Nicklaus Signature course for 90,000 Euros.

We stayed at Las Tortugas (near the coast and Mojacar) in 2007 when it was a B&B and had a wonderful time so just had to return in September 2009 as self catering to find we were still very much under its spell. So glad that we made the effort this time to tear ourselves away from all that peace and quiet (not to mention the superb pool), to explore more of the area.
