Golf Competitions in Spain

I am a keen golfer who recently moved to the Costa del Sol and was looking for competitions to enter. This is what I found.

I had always spent many hours playing against friends or work colleagues for entertainment but wanted to play in more organized competitions.  Here on the Costa del Sol there are two ways to compete in golf.

SOCIETIES

As we all know golf is expensive, in order to keep green fees low various ‘tour operators’ or individuals offer golf services. Many of these offer competitions, medal events, stableford competitions etc.  To play in these events you pay your fee, present yourself and your handicap and play social golf with some additional prizes.  These competitions are not only great value for money but also a great way to meet fellow golfers and new friends, a must if you are new to an area. All you need is to get a handicap, although some societies will ask you what you think you play off and then adjust it as you play in their competitions.

OPEN SPANISH FEDERATION COMPETITIONS

This is probably for the more serious golfer.  Firstly you must have an official Spanish golf federation handicap, this not only allows you to enter all competitions  throughout Spain, but also insures you on every course you play. To get a handicap you need to play three medal rounds with an existing Spanish Federation member.  Hand in your scorecard to the club professional who will give you a starting handicap. You then register with the Spanish Federation (60 euros for the year). You will firstly receive confirmation via the internet on the website www.golfspainfederation.com then you will receive your handicap card through the post.  As you play competitions your handicap will be adjusted accordingly, the first three competitions I played my handicap went up and up and up!

Personally I enjoy both competition formats, social and competitive, being in the federation has certainly changed my game as I no longer play endless stableford competitions.

Good luck and enjoy your golf!
