Gay Life in Marbella
                                                                               a

Gay visitors to Marbella are often disappointed at the lack of a ´gay scene´ in the town. After all, Marbella is one of the jewels of the Mediterranean – a lively town serving a large local population and a massive influx of tourists during the high season. So you would think that the law of averages would dictate that there must be somewhere for the gay guys and girls to go?

To be honest, don´t come to Marbella if you are looking for a diverse gay scene with teeming bars and throbbing discotheques. It just isn´t happening!

The town of Marbella itself is home to two gay bars, both of which can be found next to the taxi rank adjacent to Avenida del Mar in the heart of town. However, blink and you´ll miss them! They are a little on the small side.In fact, one of these bars has been locally termed ´The Taxi Bar´ - it seems the majority of customers are the taxi drivers that loiter outside and pop in now and again for a natter with the punters. Hardly Brad Pitt or David Beckham, but at least they´re handy for a lift home!

Having said all of this, Marbella is a very diverse and tolerant place. Maybe it just doesn´t need to push people into a ghetto where they can feel free to express themselves. Last summer I was walking along the beach at Los Monteros and saw 2 attractive young men lying on adjacent sunbeds on the sand outside a popular beach bar, hand in hand and clearly very much in love, while families lunched nearby and kids frolicked in the sea. The scene captured Marbella in a snapshot for me – very diverse, very cosmopolitan and very tolerant.

If you are looking for a more hedonistic gay life on the Costa del Sol, you will need to head 15km to the east of Marbella, to the sandy beaches and dunes of Cabopino, where there is a nudist beach and then a gay beach (with its own chiringuito) that you will find by simply walking from Cabopino Port in a westerly direction.

For nightlife, you will need to head east again, where you will find the popular tourist and holiday resort of Torremolinos, home to several gay bars and clubs, plus its own gay beach. Further to the east, past the airport, you will find the city of Malaga, again home to plenty of gay nightlife, although with a distinctly Spanish flavour.
