Builders on the Costa del Sol    Polaris World Hosts Davis Cup Semi-Final

The end of the hot summer season on the Costa del Sol brought further misery in the form of another destructive forest fire, this time a devastating blaze that destroyed acres of land to the north-east of La Quinta Golf & Country Club, one of the premier golf resorts on the Costa del Sol, and just a 10 minute drive from Puerto Banus.

Strangely, the blaze on 16th September came on a day when temperatures had cooled and most residents were packing away the sun loungers in readiness for the autumn. Although the cause of the fire is unknown, the blaze was fanned by strong gusty winds in the area.

When I drove past the area at 2pm on 16th September, several planes and helicopters, together with scores of land-based firefighters, were doing their utmost to stem the destruction. Although they seemed to be fighting a losing battle, their work was aided significantly at 3pm when the heavens opened and we were ´treated´ to several hours of showers.

With the fire passing so close to many luxury villas in Marbella, who knows what may have happened without this much appreciated act of God.

One thing I must comment on is the amazing job that the airborne firefighters did. In particular, the helicopter pilots did a great job in very gusty conditions, returning time after time to dump water on the affected areas.
