The Obama Impact in Spain    Gay Life in Marbella

El Corte Ingles (literally translated as ´The English Cut´) is Spain´s most revered chain of department stores. Imagine the Spanish equivalent of Debenhams or Selfridges, selling everything from TVs to toasters, from magazines to make-up, from designer label fashions to discounted cruises – everything under one roof.

In a few selected stores you will find the El Corte Ingles food hall. Revered as the home of quality, fresh produce and the finest foods available in Spain, it is THE place to buy your grub. In fact, it´s been reported that El Corte Ingles in Marbella has the most expensive supermarket in Spain – mmmm, I wondered why it was so quiet!

As I own a nearby apartment in Marbella I actually do my weekly shopping in this very same store. I know that there are cheaper places to shop in Marbella and the surrounding areas, but I do quite like the fact that you can be sure that the grapes are green, the oranges are orange and that the fish and meat are fresh……..expensive, but fresh! I also like the fact that you can literally be the only person in there – well, apart from the check-out staff, who are normally busy nattering about their latest night out, or reading the papers – I swear it must be the easiest job in Spain!

But I digress. While I was packing my groceries onto the belt at the checkout last week I noticed that a packet of potatoes from the chilled section was 10 days out of date – 10 days!!! I couldn´t believe it. There was no explanation, no real apology. Can you imagine that happening in Waitrose?

They told me that they had no more stock of that particular product, which led me to believe that they had simply left the last few packets on the shelves, rather than destroy the out-of-date stock.

This attitude is either arrogant or lazy – I´m still deciding which it is.
