One of the biggest advantages for me of living in Spain is the Dental treatment I received back in 2005.
In the UK I used to visit the dentist every 6 months, but I have always been troubled with abscesses in my gums. I had an abscess at the back of my mouth for years which was around an impacted wisdom tooth, and the dental practice and the dental hospital in the UK wouldn’t touch it as they said it was far too dangerous for me to have the tooth removed as it could cause me a paralysis down the side of my face. I lived with this for approximately 10 years, and learned to live on antibiotics, a really bad taste, and foul smell that emanated from my mouth, which no doubt others found disgusting.
I came to Spain to live in 2004 and with time the pain increased and got unbearable and so I went to a local village dentist who was French. He couldn’t understand why the UK hadn’t treated it and so did some x-rays etc. He then called me a few days later and told me he had organised for a specialist from the Dental hospital in Alicante to visit the surgery and take a look. They decided between them that the best course of action was to send me to the Clinica Kranium in Alicante and they would deal with it for me there.
I went along to the clinic in absolute fear, and they calmly said “OK lets see if we can take this out in the chair” with a local anaesthetic. I knew the tooth was embedded in the bone of my jaw and so I refused to have this done without being put to sleep - I need to point out that when it comes to the dentist, I am a total coward! He couldn’t really understand my concerns, but having had such bad dental treatment in the UK all my life I was truly terrified, and so he agreed to let me go to another hospital where I would spend the day and have the tooth taken out under anaesthetic.
My husband and a Spanish speaking friend came along with me, not that it was necessary for her to come as they all spoke English, but it was someone for my husband to sit with all day in the fully equipped BAR and RESTAURANT of the Hospital !!! They sat for most of the day eating tapas and drinking large quantities of alcohol whilst I was upstairs having the tooth out. Even the hospital couldn’t understand why I was there, and said “is the dental treatment so bad in the UK you need to be put to sleep?”

I am a spanish maxillofacial surgeon and I have been reading your adventure and cannot understand why they told you back in the UK you could have a facial paralysis. That´s completely impossible. The worst it could happen is an anesthesia of the lip but never a paralysis. Even though the total permanent anesthesia is very rare.
Congratulations for your decision

Alfredo - thank you so much for your comments - I am also at a loss as to why they refused to do the operation, but thats the UK for you !! The health service in your Country is to be commended, both NSS and private - I have had so many health problems with different members of my family since living here, and if it hadnt been for Torrevieja Hospital my Mother of 84 years would have died a long time ago.. she is now at home with a DR and a Nurse from the UHD unit at Torrevieja who visit her every day - would that happen in the UK - definatley NOT -
