I ventured to Lords last week. I had always wanted to visit the ´Home of Cricket´ in St John´s Wood, North London and so when I received 2 tickets to watch the 1st Test between England and the West Indies I was thrilled.
Only problem – I had invited my good Spanish friend Dani from the Costa Blanca along for the spectacle. I should really have known better when he admitted to not knowing the rules, but wanting to take a look ´out of curiosity´ as he had heard so much about the sport. Predictably, I had the following questions to contend with:
- Why isn´t the match ending today?
- Why don´t the batters just smash each ball out of the ground all the time, as they do in baseball?
- Why is everyone wearing white?
- When is an over over?
- How can a team be all out when they are not all out?
- Why are the players all so fat?
- Why is everyone in the crowd drinking beer at 11 in the morning?
Luckily the cold and rainy weather saved me from further questioning, and I was soaking in a hot bath back at my central London hotel by the scheduled close of play.
Dani is probably still completely baffled…..and who can blame him? What a mad sport!
