Spain – The Days of the FREE LUNCH are Over!    The San Pedro Bypass – Coming Soon…ish!

I travelled from the Costa del Sol to London last week, and often found myself popping into Waitrose or Tesco to pick up a salad or a wrap, normally costing around 3 or 4 pounds. Great value healthy food, with no preparation needed. Simply pay, eat and get on with your day.

In Spain, if you take a look around your typical supermarket like Supersol or Mercadona, you will see rows of fruit and veg, fresh fish, meats, cheeses, bread, olives, canned tuna, tinned sauces, and then a large frozen section with items such as pizzas, frozen fish etc.

But what is sorely lacking is a tempting variety of ready meals and convenience foods in a chilled section. It just doesn´t exist.
I guess it must have something to do with the tradition of the typical Spanish family enjoying home cooked food, or eating out at tapas bars, but when a Spanish friend of mine took a look recently at the food hall of M&S in London, he was totally mesmerized.

Honestly, it was as though he had never seen this type of food before. Whilst I was busy packing my trolley with tasty things like chicken breast in white wine sauce and new potatoes (all microwaveable in 10 minutes!), he was rooted to the spot, utterly bewildered.

And don´t even get me started on those ´Eat at Home for a Tenner´ meals – he thought someone was playing a joke on the customers!

I heard that this segment of the food retail market had also struggled in the United States, due to the Americans´ love of takeaways and fast food, and similarly here in Spain it looks set never to become the norm.

the convenience food in Spain is really great. Your above information has really honed up my skill and i feel that it would be of really great advantage to me.
