Christmas in Spain

As we approach Christmas in Spain, it got me thinking about what my friends and family will be getting up to back in the UK.

I´m due to be visiting the UK at the weekend, and I´ve just realised what I can expect.

The last time I went back to England the weekend before Xmas, I stayed in the beautiful city of Bath, with its rich cultural heritage and magnificent architecture.

Unfortunately, my city-centre hotel was also home to several office parties, and 2 revellers who proceeded to vomit all over the reception area as I was enjoying a coffee with the in-laws. Charming.

In addition, the city seemed packed to the rafters with people just intent on getting as drunk as possible…as quickly as possible, with big burly bouncers on the door of every pub.

Things didn´t improve during the day – with thousands of people bustling through the city´s streets, waiting in the shop´s lengthy queues, and generally getting completely stressed out.

Sure, Spain has its stresses around Xmas, but it just seems so completely different to what goes on in the UK at around this time. Of course, the Spanish like a party, but they seem to know how to enjoy themselves without having to go to excess.

For the Spanish people in general, Christmas is all about the family, and it´s nice to see that family life is still upheld (with vigour) as the single most important thing – maybe the UK can learn a lot.
