I´ve just spent a very interesting few days looking at properties on the Costa Blanca. I stayed in the La Zenia area, as I wanted to take a look at some properties in Cabo Roig and Playa Flamenca.
A colleague who is based in the area kindly took me out for a bite to eat on my first night, and we ended up in a very bizarre place.
Imagine a small 2-tier precinct in a residential area, with a selection of different bars and restaurants. True, there was plenty of choice, everything from Indian to Italian, but the general theme was definitely British. As soon as we walked into the centre, there were three competing sounds that overpowered the senses – one guy hosting a very loud pub quiz, another in a nearby bar hosting a rather exuberant karaoke evening, and the obligatory Sky Sports showing a football match of some description.
English ales on tap, proper British grub (i.e. a choice of stodge plus chips), and hundreds of Brits in shorts, trainers and football shirts. Maybe I´m being unfair, but I was genuinely amazed – for starters, the food in these places was not cheap - €10 for pie and chips anyone?! €20 for steak?
It´s been a long time since I´ve seen something like this in Spain.
Crikey, it was like being back in Birkenhead!……………but without the fighting.
