What is it about British people when they travel to Spain? As soon as they step foot in a foreign country, you can spot them a mile away…and for all the wrong reasons.
First of all, I am British, but I live in a very cosmopolitan place, in a property on the Costa del Sol, surrounded by people of all ages and from all walks of life. The local international college teaches a broad international expatriate base of 22 different nationalities. Secondly, I like my football, I enjoy a beer….but I feel like I have nothing in common with these people.
Even respected British professionals like lawyers and doctors earning 6 figure sums seem to lose all sense of self-respect when they come to Spain.
You can spot British holidaymakers quite easily in a crowd. They will be the ones that are wearing the football tops, unless of course it´s remotely sunny, in which case it´ll be the dreaded bare chest and beer belly on show. They will also probably be wearing socks with their sandals, and be sporting shaved hair and tattoos….and that´s just the women!
Brits abroad of course love all things British, and most will be happy to abandon a flamenco show for a football match on Sky Sports, to forsake a wine-tasting for a few pints of beer. In fact, I just don´t understand the beer thing. I was at the airport in Malaga the other day, waiting to depart on a morning flight. Even at 10.30am, there were people in the cafeteria drinking pints of beer to wash down their hearty egg and chip breakfasts….all British of course. Even though I was on my way to England, I couldn´t wait to return to my Spanish property.
Do they behave like this at home?
