Buying & Selling Finance & Legal Lifestyle Property Management Renting

Although many prospective Spanish property buyers are keen to invest in property for sale in Mallorca or the other Balearic islands of Menorca and Ibiza, most buyers still seem to be favouring making a purchase on the Spanish mainland.

With the majority of buyers now purchasing properties in Spain for 2nd homes, holiday residences and jet-set boltholes, the key criteria are now related to year-round ease of access, amenities and weather.

Many find that although a 2 week holiday on the beach in Mallorca is idyllic in the summer, during the winter months when people are often looking to best utilise their place in the sun, island living doesn´t quite stack up.

James Martin, from Coventry, is a big fan of Mallorca and Ibiza, but when it came to choosing the location for his Spanish holiday home, he found himself drawn to options on the mainland. “While the heart told me to opt for Mallorca, the brain told me to buy on the mainland. It just made so much more sense, particularly when I considered that the property would mainly be used in the winter for periods of 2 or 3 days at a time”.

With year-round flights an important consideration, James decided that he needed to find a base close to either Malaga or Alicante. “I live within an easy drive of 3 airports in the UK, all offering me a vast choice of low-cost flights to Alicante and Malaga. From this, properties in the Costa Blanca and the Costa del Sol rose to the top of the list”.

James opted to purchase a 2 bed apartment in Elviria, just a 10 minute drive from Marbella town centre, and a half-hour drive from Malaga airport. “By choosing a place in Marbella, I worked out that I could do a full morning´s work at my office in England, and be sitting beside the Mediterranean with a glass of sangria watching the sun go down later that same day. The property´s location also means that I can pick up a cab from the airport if I´m not in the mood to drive or to hire a car. It´s ideal”.

Of course, island living still appeals to many, but demand for properties on the Costa Blanca and properties on the Costa del Sol is picking up now that prices have dropped to new lows. We´ll leave the last word to James. “I´m a big fan of Mallorca, but when I´m in Marbella, I can be in so many amazing places in such a short space of time – Granada, Seville, Tarifa, Ronda to name just a few. I can even be skiing in 2 hours! It´s perfect”.
